Funny Characters in your WordPress 2.7 Blog

If you’ve recently upgraded your wordpress blog system and have since found funny, foreign looking characters in your posts, you are not alone.

Apparently when you upgrade sometimes your WP-Config.php gets overwritten with a new file which contains a few lines of code that can mess up your text and database character formatting and display.

In my case, after going from wordpress 2.5 to 2.7 on one system I was left with some strange characters in my posts. After some searching I came across this helpful WordPress thread and once I had changed define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8′) to define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf-8′), all was well again with my blog.

There are some other ways to fix the problem, so check out the thread as the simple solution above may not work for you.

Miki – you’re my hero. I had exactly the problem that you described after upgrading to 2.7, and I had to re-create WP-Config from an older backup. That backup contained ‘utf8′ as value for DB_CHARSET, which I now know to be wrong. Your quick fix fixed that problem! Many thanks.

thank you and thank Google for bringing me to you…I upgraded to WP 2.7 and found bad characters throughout our blog. then searched Google for “wordpress 2.7 characters”, found your site. added a “-” to the UTF parameter and everything was fixed. Love it.
